Yesterday, Eastman Kodak President Antonio Perez announced that it is developing new 5-megapixel CMOS sensors for digital cameras. The new sensors will also be able to fit into mobile phones, and Perez stated that Kodak will develop a camera phone jointly with Motorola. The two companies first announced plans to work together in January 2006. This new information shows that they have made progress. Motorola and Kodak are planning to have the camera phone ready near the end of the year.

RIM CEO Jim Balsillie told investors that the company was finally ready to introduce Wi-Fi earlier this week. He said users can expect a device with both cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity in the second half this year. The company has previously released a Wi-Fi only device with VOIP for use in corporate environments, but was waiting to release a dual-mode consumer focused device. Most other smartphone manufacturers except Palm have released combined cellular / Wi-Fi devices.

Sprint to Launch Commercial WiMAX Network In 2Q 2008
Tuesday, 10:43 AM source: Sprint

Today Sprint further confirmed its plans to launch WiMAX networks in several markets in the U.S. Sprint had previously announced three trial cities (Baltimore, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.) to test its WiMAX networks beginning late this year. In a press release today, Sprint noted that it will launch its WiMAX mobile broadband service commercially starting in the second quarter of 2008 after the successful completion of those trials. Sprint expects to cover up to 100 million people with its WiMAX network, but did not say how soon additional cities would be added.

T-Mobile USA announced that it will launch HTC's Wing, a smartphone running on Windows Mobile 6. This is the first smartphone to launch in the states with that OS pre-installed. The Wing will cost $299 with a two-year contract and will leverage the incremental advances of its brand new OS: emails can now facilitate embeddable images and graphics, email can be synched with Windows Live Hotmail and a lost or stolen handset can be wiped out remotely from an Outlook account. Windows Mobile 6 also allows Wing users to search remotely stored email and corporate address books. Since T-Mobile USA does not yet have a 3G network up and running, the phone's WiFi capability will be welcomed.

The Wing phone sports a 40-key keyboard that slides underneath its 2.8 inch screen. The Wing draws comparisons to the T-Mobile MDA, but it's much smaller. Up until now, only the T-Mobile Dash, also made by HTC, has had the option of downloading a Windows Mobile 6 upgrade, but the upgrade wipes the phone's memory clean. Other HTC handsets have gone on sale in Europe with Windows Mobile 6 pre-installed.
